Our stop in Brighton was a brief one, but long enough to squeeze in the highlights of this trendy sea-side town...
We began with a tour inside the Royal Pavilion: home to King George IV, uncle to Queen Victoria. It's obviously not done up in traditional British style; It is, in fact, called Chinois style and you guessed it, has a Chinese influence. Apparently decor from teh Far East was tres chic back in ol' George's day. We were not allowed to photograph the interior but it was incredibly elaborate with tapestries, dragons, palm trees, and gold everything! We enjoyed crumpets with clotted cream and jam in the tea room on the upper floor before setting off to the Pier. Brighton Pier used to be quite the Atlantic City of resorts at one point in time... some argue that it still is, but our impression was not quite so favourable. We found the views to be pristine, but the atmosphere was just like any cheap county fair you might encounter back in America - a lot of over-priced games/rides and more than a few shady characters milling about.
We did manage to find a quaint little tea room for lunch - very little, as it only had 4 small tables for service. The Mock Turtle ended up being one of Matt's favourite places we ate, probably because they had a pudding and cakes menu twice as long as its entree selection.
Family Favourites:
Matt - the Mock Turtle tea room
Lana - the Royal Pavilion
Amy & Emily - carnival rides
