Thank Heaven for Little Girls

About six weeks ago, after visiting Warwick Castle, Amy convinced us to buy her a toy castle set that came with little plastic archers and knights wielding swords and battle axes. I argued that it was not a toy befitting a little girl. (Emily, coincidentally, chose a pink purse which Matt didn't seem convinced was a befitting souvenir for a trip to an historical castle). My biggest problem, however, was that I didn't really believe she would ever play with the thing and it would just end up being a waste of money... especially since, at the time, the 5 GBP it cost equalled out to about $300. Okay, not quite that bad.

So the castle set came home and sat in my craft room for the last several weeks (just as I suspected!) until Matt brought it out last weekend and suggested they play. Amy excitedly agreed... and while I was cooking dinner I overheard their "play."

Amy's army was defending the castle which eventually fell into ruin and was conquered by Matt's army - who ended up all dying. After a few seconds of anti-climatic victory, Amy suggested that Matt's army "get resurrected" and come apologize for wrecking her castle. Matt agreed and not only apologized but also offered to re-build the castle for Amy. She liked the idea and then declared "I'll go make some refreshments..." (yes, she used the word "refreshments")... "since building a castle is such hard work." Soon Matt's army was eating muffins and hot chocolate and Amy declared that swords would only be used for cutting stone "henceforth."

After such an amusing display of Amy's genuine femininity, I have decided not to worry so much about her choice of toys in the future... so long as her choices are financially responsible. Ha!

  1. Do they celebrate Remembrance Day (or something like that) for the end of WWI on Nov 11? Or has that faded away there?

  2. It sounds like your girls are a pretty fair mix between you and matt. you two were always hilarious to listen to when you were chatting away together :) And I hear you about the sunshine thing- living in a basement apartment is taking its toll on my vitamin D intake and therefore my grouchy levels :)

  3. Remembrance day is still much bigger here. People wear the poppies for about a month ahead of time. Everyone on TV has them, and many people just walking around do as well. They have 2 minutes silence at church the Sunday before, and at 11am on the 11th. Although there is concern that with WWI being so far in the past, this day too will fade. They don't have memorial day though, so it is morphing much more to be 'remember all wars and all veterans'.
