Wednesday yielded a huge - and very welcome surprise: Matt came home from work early (about 3:00 PM) and then he made dinner! And not just any dinner - authentic British pasties with sausage, potatoes, carrots and onion. He even made the pastry crust too!
Okay...need the recipe for those!!! That's a great surprise....I need to show Kevin this entry!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah - I want the recipe too! I'm always looking for new things to make.
ReplyDeleteHere is the man-recipe I used
ReplyDelete1. Buy a premixed general pastry mix from the store. I think it was around 500grams and the whole bag required about 1/2 cup water.
2. Chop your veggies and meat. The meat was probably 1" pieces, and veggies 1/2" cubes- onions smaller.I cut up one big carrot and one medium potato and onion. I also cut 8 sausages into little pieces. (next time I'll try beef chunks- probably 1/2lb is plenty). I put each ingredient in a separate bowl to create good symetry later on.
3. Mix in the water with dough mix. Dough should end up fairly stiff and not really sticky at all. Divide into 7-8 balls. Probably a small tennis ball size.
3. Roll out ball on a lightly floured surface to be 10" circle.
4. Put meat, and several pieces of each veggie near the middle, but only on 1/2 of dough. keep about an inch of free space on all edges. I put in 6 meat pieces, 20 carrot, 20 potato, a bit o' onion. Add salt and pepper if desired.
5. lightly moisten the inner edge of dough. Fold over the lide and pinch the edge shut. It should end up a half-moon shape.
6. Beat an egg with a bit of milk. Brush on top of crust. Cut small slits in top of each pasty for steam to escape.
7. Finish all other pasties
8. Bake on lightly greased cookie sheet for ~50min. at 350. Top should get quite brown.
