Term Assembly: Year 1

Term assembly is something we've really enjoyed about the school system here in England. Once each term, the various classes present a program highlighting what they've "learnt."

Yesterday, the children demonstrated their progress in "maths" by solving (mentally) various addition and subtraction problems that their teacher, Mrs. Stevens, dictated. All of the questions involved working with two-digit numbers. The teachers in the audience held up answers to the various equations and the Year 1 students would go and collect the correct answer from the audience.

For literacy, the children have been studying poetry and Amy wrote her own poem which she recited during the assembly. It was:
When I was one, I ate a bun.
When I was two, I went to the zoo.
When I was three, I climbed a tree.
When I was four, I fell through the floor!
The social science topics for this term included a study on the countries of Africa and their corresponding capital cities. The children made books on the computer using various softwares to depict the landscape and animal life of Africa. Amy presented a short blip about a child named Calvin that their class is sponsoring in Nairobi, Kenya. The children also did paintings of various African landscapes: (Below: that's Amy second-from-the-right... it's kind of hard to tell which is which with all the little blonde-haired girls in her class!)
Science focused on life cycles this term. The children studied the life cycles of various animals and even had a human baby visit their class last week. They thought she was very cute! Of prime excitement, though, is the class incubator which is currently housing more than a dozen chicken eggs about ready to hatch... Every morning it's a race into the classroom to monitor the progress! Even little Emily has to go in with Amy in the mornings to see what might be happening.
