Another Day in the Alps

We spent the morning in Oberammergau, a village of 5,000 beautifully nestled at the northern reaches of the Bavarian Alps. The town is most famous for its annual Passion Play, Luftlmalerei (painted facades) and wood carvings.

The little girls sat and watched cuckoo clocks while Matt and I browsed the many wood carving shops.

They also enjoyed trying on some Bavarian hats.

After lunch in Oberammergau, we drove back to Neuschwanstein where we enjoyed spectacular views via the cable car.

We wish we would have had more time and more snow gear! A whole day hiking in the Alps is now on our list of things to do Someday.

View from the peak:

A bit of the beautiful countryside scenerey on our drive 'home.'

We saw a lot of the house-barn combo in Bavaria. We wondered if that would be a pleasant situation... On one hand, you wouldn't have to trek far into the cold, dark mornings to milk your cows. On the other hand, you live right next door to a bunch of cows.

Back at the cottage, the girls played with their paper dolls while they waited for the soup to get warm. Most nights we ate supper at 'home' - usually soup with bread from the local bakery - simple, but tasty! Afterwards we indulged in chocolate-hazelnut confections and played card games like Old Maid, Time Travel, and Milles Bornes.
