Day 10: Leeds Castle

Maidstone, County Kent, England Leeds Castle is probably our favorite castle of all - and that's saying something, because we've visited a lot of castles since moving to England a year ago. Leeds Castle has extensive grounds, an aviary, garden maze, playgrounds for the kids, restaurants, shops, and best of all - a fascinating history. It dates from the year 1119 and is mentioned in the famous Domesday book. By 1321, it belonged to King Edward II, then to Richard II, then the infamous Henry VIII. Queen Elizabeth I was imprisoned at this castle for some time prior to her coronation.

Now, Leeds Castle belongs to the Leeds Castle Foundation established by Hon. Olive, Lady Baillie, daughter of an American heiress.

We really enjoyed spending almost the entire day at this location and hope to go back again soon.

Amy next to the giant rhubarb - yes, it's actually real rhubarb and it's HUGE. The stalks were as thick as a child's leg! We wonder if you can eat this colossal variety??? One stalk alone would probably make 5 pies.

The maze was very entertaining. We split into two groups: Mom & Amy and Dad & Emily. Amy led us to victory within 15 minutes. Then we gave directions to Dad & Emily so they could find us at the summit.

After completing the maze, we exited through the underground grotto which contained a number of interesting cave sculptures... like this big green guy.
